"SIMPLY ELEGANT" Master Bedroom Makeover

"Simply Elegant" precisely describes this Master Bedroom makeover, because it was SIMPLE and ELEGANT.

3 main requirements for this space were:

  1. Add light (natural light was not properly being addressed)
  2. Bring soothing colors with paint and fabrics
  3. Add storage and appearance of space

Light Element
Bringing as much natural light into this room was also important, so custom  3 1/2" wood shutters were contracted to be built and installed by Home Depot.

Soothing Element
What a remarkable difference paint and fabric can do to soften, and light, and add a feeling of elegance to a room.

Sherwin Williams paint colors were used.
Walls:  Full Moon (very soft yellow)
Ceiling and trey: Sprout  (very soft green)
Cabinet and trim:  Pure white

Fabrics were purchased at Brentwood Interiors in Brentwood, Tennessee  to make Box Pleated Valances for the windows, re-cover the window seat, make a queen size  tufted head board, and bed skirt.  Sheers were found at Bed, Bath and Beyond to connect Valance with the floor and elongate the windows.  A simple and elegant trick on the eye.

After discovering that oak hardwood could be installed, sanded and stained for about the same price as the best quality Home Depot carpet, the decision was clear!  HARDWOOD!

Changing the Brass door hardware to oil rubbed bronze also softened the feel of the room.

Storage Element
This master also needed  extra storage  to compensate for small closets, so carpenters were hired to build a cabinet.  The cabinet had to have the following features:

  • Look like it had always been there
  • Ample storage for clothing, etc
  • Book shelves with doors
  • Have a clean, polished, and elegant look
  • Have recessed doors for the television that would open when needed, yet when closed be seamless with the rest of the cabinet.
  • Ample access to outlets for  electronics.
Lastly, we wanted to make this master feel as spacious as possible.  The carpet was 23 years old, and after discovering the price of solid oak hardwood flooring would be about the same cost as quality carpet, hardwood was an easy choice.  With that choice came the added illusion of a LARGER room!

Now for the before and afters:
Navy ceiling and trey, beige walls, small bookcase
Cabinetry, hardwood, pain and fabric

Changed headboard, fabrics, bed skirt, sitting area
Box pleated Valance.  Love the white buttons and trim!

Old cluttered book shelf
New Cabinet.  LOVE

After paint/and proper placement of furniture
Previous entrance to bath area

Spray painted lamps to match hardware and trim to lamp shades
Only place a few simple cherished items for display that are a reflection of who you are

In the end, this makeover is a MASTER SUITE RETREAT that is a soothing and relaxing place to sleep, read, and retreat from the world.  Simple and Elegant goes a long way.
